THE POLITICS

OF MERELY BEING

A mist of red attaches to certain trees.

Others look as if they soon will green.

Forsythia's ancient yellow came before.

Wild shapes prepare to colonize the ground.

A pair of ponies munch and sniff and, penned

and haltered, give the air their ripened presence.

Their hoary contract lets them meditate

before their barn--come stormy winds, whatever.

But ground hog, crow, and chipmunk heed the fear--

predator or storm or gunner coming.

Each employs aversive strategies,

leaving the theatre to hostile whatevers.

Events in Lower Frederick Township show

a faint resemblance to those in Kosovo.
