CS 173 Lab 10: Fun with Sound!
Objectives:
Working in Computer Science means being able to find and quickly
learn to use new tools. This lab will give you some experience with
working with other pieces of (free) software, and will also help
prepare you for future labs.
Your Task:
-
If anyone is around, turn the sound down low on your machine or use
an earphone.
-
Install the "audacity" sofware package.
-
Download a short sound file (less than 1 minute) of type WAV, MP3 or
OGG to work with.
-
Find and begin reading tutorials about audacity. Focus on how sound is
stored in a file, and basic editing. A few I found are:
-
https://wiki.brown.edu/confluence/display/CISDOC/Audacity+Tutorial
-
http://www.yourmachines.org/tutorials/audacity.html
-
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/tutorials.html
-
http://quicktoots.linuxaudio.org/toots/audacity/
-
Do some basic editing of your sound file using audacity. Modify the sound
file in some ways you find interesting. Create a new sound file of 20 seconds
or less and save it to a new filename. Have fun and do something really
creative!
-
Email the original and your modified file to me as an attachment.
That's it!
Notes:
-
As always, this lab is due by 9am Friday.
-
Email your files as attachments to rliston at ursinus dot edu.
NOTE: Name your files lab10_orig_<your login name>.<type> and lab10_new__<your login name>.<type>,
where <type> is "wav", "mp3" or "ogg".
Make sure the subject is the following: "CS 173 Lab 10 submission".
