The Internet
The Internet grows and changes rapidly, so only the most basic information will
be given here.
The
usual way to find information is by means of a subject search, using one of the
many search engines. There is not a "best" search engine. If you don't get
satisfactory results from one, try another. They don’t all search the same web
sites or use the same method for searching.
Most
search engines have the option of advanced searching, but the terminology
varies. It is keyword searching, which permits you to combine terms for more
precise results. Look around on the homepage and follow the instructions. Help
screens provide useful tips.
SOME POPULAR
SEARCH ENGINES AND THEIR ADDRESSES
Here are some "tried and true" search engines, but don't be limited by this
list. New ones spring up and old ones change at a phenomenal rate.
This is only a starting point.
Yahoo

Google http://google.com
AltaVista http://altavista.com/
Excite http://www.excite.com/
Infoseek

Lycos http://hotbot.lycos.com/
BE AWARE:
There is
scholarly material on the Web, but it can be difficult to find. Carefully
evaluate any information you find on the Internet, using standard methods of
evaluation.
A good way to begin searching is through the
Librarians’ Index
to the Internet, one of the QuickLinks at the lower right
hand corner of the Myrin Library Homepage. Then click on subject hierarchies or
search by keyword.
