Topic Areas:
Mathematics of Optical Design
Prepared Talks:
- Mixed partial derivatives: a threat to automotive safety ?
- When viewing a curved mirror, it is apparent that some non-linear transformation is at work, which depends upon the mirror shape. In this talk I will address the problem of determining the mirror shape that will realize a given transformation. Generally this problem does not have solutions, because it is in a sense equivalent to being given the purported partial derivatives of a function whose graph is the mirror surface. I will discuss several methods of finding approximate solutions, and give applications to panoramic imaging and the design of sideview mirrors for automobiles that don't have blind-spots or distortion. Several physical prototype mirrors will be present for audience members to inspect. For more information, see http://www.math.drexel.edu/~ahicks/.
