PARSING SCHEME
At various points through the year, you will be asked to identify various words in sentences: the following is a general guide for what you are expected to give.
note: the key is that I want to see that you know how to look the word up in a dictionary if you do not know the meaning.
I. Part of Speech
Always identify the part of speech of the underlined word. The following abbreviations may be used:
n- noun v- verb adj- adjective adv- adverb prep- preposition
conj- conjunction part- participle ger- gerund or gerundive
2. Specific Parts of speech
A. Indeclinable words
Identify by part of speech
i.e. per- a preposition
sed- a conjunction
B. Nouns and Pronouns
Give the case and number as used in that specific sentence, as well as the nominative singular form and, in the case of nouns, the gender.
i.e.- sororem- acc. s. of soror f.
mihi- dat s. of ego
Note- distinction MUST be made on cases
feminae could be gen s, dat s or nom p. Which is it in the sentence?
C. Adjectives
Give the case, number and gender of the adjective, the noun that it modifies, the form of the adjective (positive, comparative or superlative) and the nominative singular for of the adjective.
i.e. bonos- acc. p. mas, modifying "xxxxx," positive form, from bonus, a, um
D. Verbs
a. Finite forms
Give the tense (pre/imp/fut/per/PP/FP), voice (Act/Pas) and mood (Ind/Sub) of the verb. Also give the pronoun subject from the verb and the first principal part of the verb.
i.e. amabitur is fut, pas, ind., he/she/it from amo
b. Infinitives
Give the tense (Pre/Past/Fut), voice (Act/Pas) and first principal part of the verb.
i.e. posuisse is past act infinitive from pono
Be sure to identify verb as an infinitive
c. Imperative
Identify as an imperative and tell whether it is singular or plural. Give the first principal part of the verb.
i.e. audite is a plural imperative from audio
