LOCATIVE CASE: PLACES

     With the names of cities (Rome, Athens, Sparta, Brundisium, Alexandria etc) and small islands (Sicily, Crete etc.), the prepositions ad, ab and in are not used.

 

1. Places to which: name in the accusative without ad.

Ex:   Romam- to Rome        Carthaginem- to Carthage

        Cretam- to Crete

 

2. Places from which: name in the ablative without ab.

Ex:    Brundisio- from Brundisium      Athenis- from Athens

         Sicilia- from Sicily

 

3. Place in which- this is the locative, and rules vary.

First and second declension singular- use the genitive case

Ex:    Romae-  in Rome, at Rome

        Corinthi-  in Corinth, at Corinth

First and second plural, plus third plural- use the ablative

Ex:   Athenis- in Athens, at Athens

        Sardibus- in Sardes, at Sardes

Third declension singular- use the dative

   Ex:   Carthagini- at Carthage, in Carthage

 

Special cases- note these words and their special use:

domi- at home        animi- in the mind       

belli-   at war            humi-  on the ground
