GENEVIEVE'S WORDS OF THE MONTH

   One of my students, Genevieve Romeo, has come upon some rather unusual words when looking in her Latin dictionary. Each month, we will publish two or three of these words and (if possible) cite their use from an ancient source. If you know of a source, please e-mail me.

WORDS FOR JUNE OF 2000

SINCE IT IS SUMMER, LET'S LOOK AT FOOD....

moretum (n) a salad (nice and light for you dieters....)

bumatsus, a, um  having large grapes (wine on a summer evening?)

omnivolus, a, um  all-craving (for those who can't stay on a diet)

 

Words for May of 2000

SOME ADJECTIVES THIS MONTH:

plagosus, a, um  fond of flogging

silvifragus, a, um   forest-smashing

trifilis, -is  having three strands of hair, like Homer Simpson

 

Words for April of 2000

mugio, mugire  to moo (also remugio- to moo back and admugio- to moo towards)

 

lucubro, lucubrare   to burn the midnight oil (which Genevieve updates as "to stay up late writing papers)
