FUTURE TENSE, Active voice

Latin uses two sets of endings to show future tense. These depend on the conjugation of the verb.

FIRST AND SECOND CONJUGATION VERBS

amo amare                                 terreo terrere (long -ere)

Both drop the -re from the second pr. part to form the root.

amaBO   I will love                    terreBO   I will scare

amaBIS   you will love              terreBIS   you will scare

amaBIT    he will love                terreBIT   he will scare

amaBIMUS  we will love         terreBIMUS   we will scare

amaBITIS   y’all will love          terreBITIS   y’all will scare

amaBUNT   they will love         terreBUNT   they will scare

Memory trick: Third and Fourth conjugations are the "old maids." They have no "bo" in their future!!!!!

Third conjugation causes problems, as it always does.

duco ducere

Drop the -ere from the second pr. part and add the endings.

ducAM    I will lead              ducEMUS   we will lead

ducES    You will lead         ducETIS    y’all will lead

ducET    He will lead          ducENT    they will lead

Fourth conjugation

audio audire

Drop the -re from the 2nd pr. part

audiAM    I will hear             audiEMUS   we will hear

audiES    you will hear         audiETIS   y’all will hear

audiET    he will hear          audiENT     they will hear

Third -io verbs

capio capere

Drop the -re from the 2nd pr. part. e changes to an I.

It is as if they are -ire verbs.

capiAM     I will take             capiEMUS    We will take

capiES     you will take         capiETIS     y’all will take

capiET     he will take          capiENT    they will take
