Global Warming: Health Issues Global warming is making ways for infectious diseases and putting many at risk. The IPCC have found that in the future the rising temperatures may be rather measured in bodies and not degrees. If we do not fix global warming now it will bring about infectious diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and Encephalitis. These diseases will be spread as the temperatures rise and the main carriers for these diseases is the mosquito. Anyone who goes into the path of a mosquito or even a rodent will spread the disease in their wake. These diseases are produced with rise in the temperature of our environment. So as the temperature rises so does the mosquito rate of infectious diseases.

If we do not fix global warming the diseased mosquitoes will keep growing and growing each year our environments temperature keeps rising. With more and more people getting sick from these diseases over something we are producing will end up destroying the planet and for all we know maybe even end man kind.

Alcohol and Alcohol Related Problems Reflection: (Alcohol abuse). College students, health problems, and driving under the influence are all types of alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse can later lead to the person to becoming an alcoholic. College students are a prime example for abusing alcohol. Saying they are going out to go get wasted tonight and drinking as much as they can till they black out is a serious problem. Now youthful students in high  schools have shown a decline in the consumption of alcohol. Drunk driving fatalities have dropped. Drunk driving fatalities has dropped form 60% to 41% in the last couple years. From drinking for many years the alcoholic can develop cirrhosis of the liver which can shut the alcoholics liver down and they could die. It is an irreversible effect from drinking alcohol.

Underage drinking is an issue that police and schools must control. It is said that 3 million teenagers are alcoholics. This number should be controlled by tougher laws with teenagers who drive drunk or those college students that are underage should have even more tougher consequences for getting busted in public for underage.

The law should have the underage drinkers arrested and booked and spend a night in jail till their parents come and get them out the next day. then the underage drinkers should then appear in court to fine out their fine and community service to pay back to the community they live in.

Schools should control underage drinking by having on the id's the ages of the students each year when they get new id's so they do not get in to the parties. Schools can also crack down on underage drinking by having dry campuses and if they are caught they have to meet with the dean as well as their parents on what is going to happen with them. Three levels should be constructed for being caught for underage drinking on campus, 1) written up, 2) community service around campus and a fine, 3) meeting with board and a parent meeting with the dean of the college.

Topic: Issue #1and 2 Reflections: Gregg Easterbrook  believes with the "Yes" aspect of this issue is that HMOs offer quality care and that high- quality medical care you can get at an affordable rate. But on the "No" aspect of the issue Ronald Glasser  argues that managed care companies like Easterbrook said above, is however caring more about how much they make off of people then giving back to the people. Both these men ate going against each other b/c of the different views they have on the topic probably b/c of there professions. They also could be trying to get people to believe in their explanations to ring people in.
Topic: Issue #3 Reflections: both writers have good points of our nations employee based heath care plans. But I would go towards the "Yes" side of the two articles. The "yes" side I believe really does show the truth about employee based heath care plans.  that many employee's in the program get many benefits from having the plan. The plans offered in the work force has also brought more uninsured people in.

Employee plans have shown that they cost less than if you just paid for yourself. Economically it is better to go for the employee plan as well. And if there is compensation involved more employees tend to participate in the plan. Finally the employees base form showed a proven solid foundation.

I do think our health care system should be nationalized because more people in the world that are poor need affordable health care so they can stay healthy and to help their families when they are in need. Demo and Rep. want to both change the insurance policies. Dem. have affordable prices. Rep. Have individuals manage your health care.

Topic: Issue #4 Reflections: Both authors show that they agree that the price of prescription drugs have gone up. However, Koller believes that the reason the prices have gone up is because of political protection. Then Bailey believes that the reason our prescription drugs have gone up is because of us Americans buying more drugs.

I do not believe what Bailey is saying is true. I do not think just because us American are buying more drugs that the prices are going up just because of that. I would lean towards more of what Koller is saying that the Prescription drug companies are just not offering coverage or they are just doing what they need to do to make the government happy.

I think that we need the government to seriously look over the prescription dug programs and make adjustments to fit everyone from children to the elderly. I do not think that Americans should be allowed to purchase prescription drugs out of the United States. It first is illegal and should stay illegal. That is that. But if there is no way a person who is in direr need of a drug and needs to get it from outside the United States for their illness.

Topic: Issue #6&7 Reflection: For Obesity we as people can probably not control the advertisements that are on t.v. But parents can make their children eat the right things and not the junk food. a greater emphases should be put on the physical education aspect at school. Schools need to offer a healthier lunch in the cafeteria.

Euthanasia I believe is the worst thing any one could do. To me it is really committing a murder. If a person had committed euthanasia they should be in jail for murder and should get life in jail.

Topic: Issue #9-10 Reflection: Should Embryonic Stem Cell Research Be Permitted? Personally I do not agree with this topic at all. I would not agree with the Yes side of the issue b/c many say there is potential for growing new limbs, finding new cures for diseases, cloning, and preventing diseases. That is a great reasons but it is not right to screw with nature.

I learn more towards the No side of this issue. The Author believes that a single celled human embryo is a a living thing that directs there own developments and should not be used for experimentation. I completely agree with him. A embryo is a living thing that no scientist should just take and conduct experiments on. It is a future human being that they are playing with.

Should Addiction to Drugs Be Labeled a Brian Disease? Me personally I do believe that it should be labeled a brain disease b/c that person brain thinks about the drug and constantly wants it all the time. Then when they are not on the drug they think about it constantly and then go and take it again so they can feel better.

I learn more towards the Yes side of this issue. When some one is addicted to a drug they are considered have a brain disease b/c they depend on the drug all the time. They crave the drug. These addicts have an illness that needs to be fixed to make them better.

Topic: Issue #5 Reflections: On the Pro side of the article I would agree with the author about Pre-employment drug testing.   The author shows many statistical evidence that shows how often people who are taking drugs miss work, what drugs the employees tested positive for, and how drug testing has increased. Many multimillion dollars companies have the money to pay for employee drug testing since they are only 12 dollars a person.

Testing in the work place has decreased the number of employee drug use by 33 %. With hiring a drug user it is much more costly then hiring someone who does not use drugs. I would hire the person who does not have the drug problem so it would not be costing my company money.

I think pre-employment drug testing should be allowed to save many companies a lot of money that they can be using for better things then using it towards their drug user employees. I would also drug- test to make the working environment safe.

Topic: Issue #11 Reflection: Is Stress Responsible for disease? In my opinion it is not responsible for disease. The Yes author believes that with stress the fight or flight response can cause people to have coronary heart disease. Also the author believes that stress can be linked to cancer. Which to me is ridiculous.

The NO author believes that no one can come to an argument of what stress is, so therefore stress can not be blamed on disease. Which is a very true statement. He doesn't believe that the flight or fight response has to deal with disease too.

Stress is something everyone goes through day in and day out. It is a normal part of being a human being. It will not go away. But I do not believe that it can cause diseases for us. I do believe however to control stress one can exercise, meditate, eat healthy, etc.

Lesson Plan: Steriods

URSINUS COLLEGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

LESSON PLAN FORMAT

COURSE TOPIC DATE:  Does Anabolic Steroid Use Cause Serious Health Problems for Athletes? 11/3/06

STANDARDS: (the number and write what it states) 10.1.12 B. D.

OBJECTIVES: (student learning what they learn and what the expectations are) To have the students know the effects of Anabolic Steroids on the body, symptoms, why athletes start using anabolic steroids, why it is banned from athletic competition, discuss recent events with athletes in trouble with steroids.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE: (simple to the more complex to the known to the unknown: what they already know; go back a refresh but not re teach it all over again) Go back over the effects of drugs on the body and go over steroids in general. Then get into what anabolic steroids are and so on.

MATERIALS: (what am I going to need; computer, handouts, etc.) Handout, video, TV, and computer.

REMINDERS: (key words or concept that I want to get across to my students) What Anabolic steroids can do to their bodies, why they should not begin to take anabolic steroids, show them the signs and symptoms of anabolic steroids so they can maybe see if one of their friends is taking them and to just make them aware.

METHODS/ORGANIZATION:

Introduction/Motivation: (how am I going to introduce the information; how I’m I going to motivate them to want to learn the information) I am going to start out by referencing sports figures that they know and also go through the recent news.

Presentation: (how I’m I going to present it; lecture, read, video, notes, discussion, debates) I am going to first have the class answer a questionnaire about anabolic steroids to begin the class period. Then go on from that to then have a lecture and note taking time. At or near the end of class I will show a video on anabolic steroid use.

Exploration: (practice/ application/ discussion; writing) I would have them explore this issue by having a discussion with them all and start a debate between all of them to see from what I said to them they use in the discussion and debate. Also I would have them write down what they would do if they knew a friend took anabolic steroids? If they would keep it a secret/ or tell someone?

Closure: (how am I going to bring the subject to a close?)  By telling them statistic about anabolic steroid use.

ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES: (How will I know if the students achieved the statements I have said at the beginning of the lesson? Higher standards?) I will give them the same questionnaire I gave them at the beginning of class and see how good they did on the second time around to see if they retained the information.

HOMEWORK: (What I’m I going to assign for the next class) I will assign to take what they learned today and write up a reflection on their opinion on the subject.

SELF-CRITIQUE: Did my points come across? Did I get enough preparation for that class? Did I use up to date information?

Topic: Issue #12 Reflection: Can Spirituality Overcome Illness? On the Yes side the authors believe that contend that faith and spirituality will enhance and prolong life. The No side the authors believes there is no scientific evidence that spirituality can heal.

The Yes side states that using faith will heal you, trust your instinct more often, practice and apply self care regularly, beware of people with all the answers, nocebo, and remember immortality is impossible.

Lesson Plan Marijuana

URSINUS COLLEGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

LESSON PLAN FORMAT

COURSE TOPIC DATE:  Is Marijuana Safe Enough to Be Legalized? 11/6/06

STANDARDS: (the number and write what it states) 10.1.12 D, E

OBJECTIVES: (student learning what they learn and what the expectations are) To have the students understand why some people need the use of marijuana medically and how marijuana came about and the effects from using it on the body. Student should be able to at the end of this lesson to state the effects on the body and the need for the use of marijuana medically using the lower level approach.

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE: (simple to the more complex to the known to the unknown: what they already know; go back a refresh but not re teach it all over again) I will go back over what marijuana is and then lead it on with what the government has done over the years to ban it and then go into now the debate if it should be legalized or not. They should know that marijuana is illegal and that it can be harmful to your health. Should be able to identify it.

MATERIALS: (what am I going to need; computer, handouts, etc.) Handouts, video, and television.

REMINDERS: (key words or concept that I want to get across to my students) I want to get across why there is such a debate about the issue of letting marijuana being legalized for medical purposed and why to not have it legalized for other reasons. That marijuana is an illegal substance and you can get in trouble selling it or buying it and what are the consequences.

METHODS/ORGANIZATION:

Introduction/Motivation (how am I going to introduce the information; how I’m I going to motivate them to want to learn the information) I will start out the class with a statistical handout about marijuana and have them all read it out loud as I pick people to read to get all of them participating.

Presentation (how I’m I going to present it; lecture, read, video, notes, discussion, debates) I am going to lecture some of the period and have them take notes. Then going on by asking questions to get their own opinions on the topics, which will then lead into a discussion. Should marijuana be legalized? Do you believe it is a gate way drug? Should it be used for medical use? Why? Is smoking marijuana have more or less chemicals then cigarettes? Should the government legalize marijuana ? Has marijuana become more potent?

Exploration (practice/ application/ discussion; writing) Discussion and writing I will use.

Closure (how am I going to bring the subject to a close?) I am going to bring the class to a close by showing them a video on what we talked about apart of the period to sum it all up.

ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES: (How will I know if the students achieved the statements I have said at the beginning of the lesson? Higher standards?) After the video I will give out a little five question quiz to see if the students were paying attention. After they are all done we will go over it together.

HOMEWORK: (What I’m I going to assign for the next class) To go home and research and find an article pertaining on if marijuana should be legalized or not.

SELF-CRITIQUE:

Newspaper Article Reflection: In this articles the man is persuading us Americans and readers not to be influenced by ads and the media on what to think and go by in our every day life that we lead. He wants us to lead our own lives with no influences and thoughts about the television and advertisements we see.

We as people he says should take a break from the news, television, and seeing billboards. We should maybe take a break from it all for about a week. He then goes on to tell us our own minds belong to us and that we have to take control of them. Our minds should let us live our own agenda. We should then start editing the information that is presented to us. he believes that we should pay more attention to things that are important to us and not to much to the ones outside our lives b/c they are not as important.

Topic: Issue #13 Does Abortion Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer? The AAPLOG believes that there is without a doubt that women who do in fact get an abortion at some point in their life will have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than a women who cares the baby the whole term.  A 1970 study they looked at showed that women who got abortions had a 3.5% increase in breast cancer. On the other hand the Joyce Arthur believes that that there is a very small increase with women who got abortion who developed breast cancer. She also goes on to say that some of the studies suggested where older case controls that suffered from major biases.

I believe in the No side of the issue. I believe there is not enough information and reliable statistical information to prove that women who get abortions tend to get breast cancer. There are probably many women who have had abortions that did not ever get breast cancer. It's just a think a fear tactic to get women not to have an abortion. It should be up to the women on what she wants to do with the baby, it should not be the statistical research that does not have enough background that should influence the women into getting the abortion.

ABC a cruel hocks for anti-abortionists to use against women to try and to get them to not have an abortion. it has gotten as bad as them posting things on the internet about how women who get an abortion are more likely to get breast cancer. Anti-abortionists promote the ABC link b/c 17 out of 37 studies have shown a small overall increase in breast cancer risk for women who do have an abortion. Anti- abortionists are now taking their crusade to legislatures and court rooms. What if the women seeking the abortion has to get one b/c she was raped. What does that do for her? Increases her breast cancer risk, who really knows.

Topic: Issue #17 Reflection: “Should Parents Be Allowed To Opt Out Of Vaccinating Their Children?”  Barbara Fisher believes that vaccines can cause serious injury and that parents should have the option of vaccinating their children. she also goes on to say that vaccinations need to be researched more to find out how they can cause injury and death to children. The main point she is trying to get at is the parents are the ones that have to live with their decision not the doctors.

On the other hand Steven Shelov that the growing vaccine movement is dangerous and may trigger disease outbreaks. However immunization is a public health issue. He goes on to say that parents who do not immunize their children are pretty much participating in malpractice against the potentially deadly decisions.

I believe that some vaccinations should be required by law against the major diseases. We do not need the world to go about having epidemics again like back in olden times. We need these particular immunizations to prevent them. There could be a middle ground.

Topic: Issue #18 Reflection: Does Anabolic Steroid Use Cause Serious Health Problems for Athletes? Athletes use the steroids to bulk up and to make them unstoppable in their particular sport. There are many symptoms later in the athletes life that can come up. Some of these symptoms can be fatal. The use can also lead to tendons and ligaments problems as the athletes keeps competing.

The Yes side of this issue states that now even more than before

Topic: Issue #15 Reflection: Is Gun Control a Public Health Issue? Josh Sugarmann states that guns increase the cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, and lost wages, making them a serious health problem. he also goes onto say that to really get ride of this crisis we need to completely ban the product. Guns are also the second most deadly consumer product. Economic costs on the other hand for not regulating guns is staggering.

However the opposing authors believe that violence is not a matter of honest citizens killing simply b/c a gun is nearby but of criminals committing violent acts. Say the CDC should focus on the public health issues and not veer off on social policy. CDC however was getting there facts wrong by miss citing.

I would agree with the Yes side of this issue b/c I believe that guns are a public health issue. They kill many people day in and day out. It needs to stop and our government and agencies need to stop the violence and killing of innocent people.

Topic: Issue #20 Reflection: "Does Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Pose a Serious Health Threat?" MCS is classified as a syndrome in which some individuals report having widespread of symptoms due to exposure to various levels of chemical substances. Paul Yanik believes that MCS is becoming one of our greatest health challenges. However, Stephen Barrett argues that MCS is an ill-defined problem and that no scientific test has ever provided evidence that it has an organic basis.

MCS I believe is not a serious health problem. I would agree with the NO side of this issue. MCS does not have clear information on what the syndrome does to people. MCS to me is a syndrome that people can make up for themselves. From reading the articles it seems that the syndrome is kind of like the person has bad allergies.

To look more into MCS researchers need to really find out what causes the syndrome. I believe MCS is not a serious health issue but needs to be studied more to really find out the problem with people with MCS.

Topic: Issues #8 & 14

Reflections: Should race play an important role in the treatment and study of a disease? I believe that it should play a role. With scientist studying certain races to find cures and why some races have different reactions to drugs or why this happens to the race and not that race, it will help us as Americans maybe live longer and prevent some diseases from becoming worse in certain races.

I think that doctors should treat all race differently on how they react to the disease and drugs. it will give the doctors and scientist more information on what they can do to help more people with the same disease in that certain racial group. Social economic has an impact by what you eat that lead to your body make-up that can lead to diseases.

Is PMS a medical disorder? To me I think with PMDD it is but with PMS I do not think it is a disorder. PMS is what the body goes through when the menstrual cycle begins. I believe just taking Advil for cramps or Midol for bloating a fatigue is what most of us women do when our menstrual cycle arrives.

PMDD however is much more complicated than PMS. I think with PMDD one would consider it to be a disorder b/c is has many more symptoms then PMS and it may need medical attention to make it better. Only a few women suffer form PMDD. Those who do usually take medications prescribed to them by their doctors. From reading it I believe that PMDD is a disorder that needs to find a cure so these women who have it to let them live normally.
