In the early 1950's Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lachman donated 51 paintings and watercolors to Ursinus College.  The bulk of this collection is comprised of late 19th century American paintings, which proved to be the core of the museum's current strength in this area of collecting.  The Lachmans acquired works by Harry Roseland, John Twachtman, William Whittemore, and Colin Cambell Cooper.

Upon the death of Dr. George E. Pfahler in 1957, distinguished radiologist and member of the Ursinus College Board of Directors, a collection of 123 paintings from his estate was donated to the college.  The focus of this collection was broad and included 18th and 19th century European landscape and genre paintings and watercolors and paintings by early 20th century Eastern Pennsylvania artists.  Several of these works were in need of conservation, and the college did not have the resources at the time to properly care for them.  Therefore, approximately 50 of the works were sold at auction in 1980.

In 1970 Mr. Martin H. Bury, an industrialist and friend of Ursinus College, added 5 more American works to Ursinus' growing collection complementing the Lachman gift with works by Colin Campbell Cooper, Joseph H. Greenwood and Hudson River School painter, Thomas B. Griffin.
