The Folk Art collection of the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art includes a wide variety of paintings, sculptures, painted found objects, and elaborative walking sticks.  Represented in the collection are artworks by eight visionary self-taught artists including Garland and Minnie Adkins, Lillian Barker, Linvel Barker, David Ellinger, Thomas May, Carl McKenzie, Katherine Milhous, and Hugo Spencer.

"Local Visions: Folk Art from Northeast Kentucky," curated by Adrian Swain and organized from the Folk Art Collection at Morehead State University, Kentucky, was exhibited at the Berman Museum of Art in 1993 and highlighted several artworks from the Berman's Folk Art collection.  Included in this exhibition were 103 objects representative of the work of self-taught artists from a relatively small area in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.  In this exhibition Swain underscored the idea of a personal need to create while challenging the popular issue of trying to find a place for rural American folk art within a cultural context.  The work he said "demonstrates once again that the creative impulse is universal, and not limited only to those with formal training.  Indeed, the absence of a background in "art" fosters a special kind of creative expression."
